Admiral of the Fleet The Right Honourable Lord Louis Francis Albert Victor Nicholas MOUNTBATTEN, KG, GCB, OM, GCSI, GCIE, GCVO, DSO, ADC(P), FRS, 1st Earl Mountbatten of Burma, born on 25 June 1900 at Frogmore House, Windsor, Berkshire, the youngest son of Admiral of the Fleet The Right Honourable Sir Louis Alexander MOUNTBATTEN, GCB, GCVO, KCMG, ADC(P), 1st Marquess of Milford Haven, formerly styled His Serene Highness Prince Louis of Battenberg (1854-1921) Her Grand Ducal Highness Princess Victoria Alberta Elisabeth Mathilde Marie of Hesse & By The Rhine, VA, (1863-1950).  At the time of his birth he was styled His Serene Highness Prince Louis of Battenberg and took style of a younger son of a Marquess on 7 November 1917 when his father renounced his German Princely style and title.  Created Viscount Mountbatten of Burma on 27 August 1946. Appointed Viceroy of India and Governor-General of India on 12 February 1947.  Appointed Governor-General of the Dominion of India (following Independence) on 28 October 1947. Created Earl Mountbatten of Burma and Baron Romsey on 28 October 1947.  Murdered (by a bomb planted by the IRA) on 27 August 1979, off the coast of Mullaghmore, Co. Sligo, Republic of Ireland.  Following a Ceremonial Funeral at Westminster Abbey, London, he was subsequently buried at Romsey Abbey, Hampshire on 5 September 1979.  Married on 18 July 1922 at St Margaret’s Church, Westminster, London, England - The Honourable Dame Edwina Cynthia Annette ASHLEY, CI, GBE, DCVO, born 28 November 1901 at 32 Bruton Street, Mayfair, London, England, the daughter of Colonel The Right Honourable Wilfrid William ASHLEY, 1st Baron Mount Temple (1867-1939) and Amalia Maud “Maudie” Mary CASSEL (1879-1911).  Died on 21 February 1960 in Jesselton, North Borneo.  Buried at sea, off the coast of Portsmouth, Hampshire on 25 February 1960.

Married (2) on 6 March 1999 in Ashford, Kent – Mrs Susan Penelope Jane HENDERSON, born 23 October 1959 at Blackpool, Lancashire, the daughter of Stephen COATES and Miss Hazel KELLY. Marriage dissolved in 2006.
